    We are working with local institutions to transform Tanzania’s cotton and textiles sector by raising the yields of more than 400,000 smallholders and catalysing downstream industries through a range of activities aimed at the sector’s key constraints.

    We are building the Tanzanian tea sector in partnership with the Wood Family Trust, government bodies and the private sector. The Chai Project aims to expand tea cultivation, increase productivity, improve quality and boost returns to smallholders.

    We have expanded our partnership with the Wood Family Trust in tea sector development to Rwanda. The Imbarutso Project is working with the Government, factories and smallholder farmers to address a variety of constraints along the whole value chain.

    We have supported two innovative private equity funds which aim for social impact and financial returns by investing in agricultural SMEs in East Africa whose growth can catalyse the value chains they operate in, benefitting large numbers of smallholders.

    We have developed and piloted a research tool mapping the supply and demand of agricultural finance at a national level to provide credible, detailed information that should increase the quantity and effectiveness of investment in African agriculture.

    We support this company to invest in enterprise models delivering sustainable economic development and social impact in Mozambique. It ultimately aims to encourage greater private sector investment in the country by demonstrating models and sharing lessons.

    We founded the Kilimo Tust in 2005 as an independent organisation funding and supporting agricultural projects in East Africa. Kilimo is now focusing on implementing regional sector programmes in staple crop markets across the East African Community.

    We have partnered with the Department for International Development to support the Kenya Gatsby Trust to take forward sector programmes in the country, beginning with the cotton and water sectors, and with the dairy and aquaculture sectors under consideration.

  • Tanzania Gatsby Trust

    We founded Tanzania Gatsby Trust in 1992 as an independent institution dedicated to promoting economic development in the country. It has supported small businesses, primarily run by women, through microfinance, training and other activities.
