Focus Areas

*

We have funded programmes in neuroscience for more than 15 years and are now focusing our support on neural circuits and behaviour.

Our key focus areas are outlined below:

Focus Areas

Circuits and Behaviour

*

The projects in our research portfolio share a common goal – to understand the anatomical and functional development and operation of neural circuits that underlie behaviour. Long-term, we aim to support this research in dedicated, state-of-the-art centres.

World-Class Basic Research

*

We have invested in a number of innovative collaborative research programmes around the world in the broad area of neural circuits and behaviour. These reflect the types of research we envision being carried out at the forthcoming Sainsbury-Wellcome Centre.

Centres of Excellence

Our first major initiative was developing the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit, now one of the world’s leading centres for theoretical neuroscience. To take advantage of the latest developments, we are now creating two new major research institutes.

Theoretical Neuroscience

*

We strongly believe that it is essential to ground experimental neuroscience in a firm theoretical context. We support research and collaboration at three world-class centres for theoretical neuroscience across the globe.

Multidisciplinary Consortia

*

Many of the scientists we support have close ties and, in some cases, ongoing collaboration. We support consortia of laboratories working together on specific topics with common goals that can only be achieved by sharing skills, experience and resources.

Strategic Partnerships

We collaborate with like-minded organisations to enhance our outreach. Strategic partnerships range from supporting capital projects to funding meetings and symposia as well as building the capacity of organisations representing neuroscience interests.
