Institute for Government
“An independent centre available to politicians and the civil service, focused on making government more effective.”
This year, the Gatsby Trustees funded the inception of a new Institute for Government. Good government is central to a fair and prosperous society. But until now there has been no single institution in the UK which is independent of government or any single political party to develop the highest standards of management and policymaking in the civil service.
The new Institute for Government is independent and cross-party. It will
work at the highest level, with political leaders from all parties and
senior civil servants. It will draw on expertise and research from all
sectors including business and academe, but it will be independent of
academic institutions.
The Institute will have three core activities:
- supporting the development of the skills and capabilities of senior policymakers in the UK;
- conducting and supporting practical research into key questions of public administration and governance; the research will be intended both to have direct and immediate positive effects and to provide a deeper understanding of the underlying issues;
- publishing and promoting thought leadership on effective government and public administration.
