Nairobi Market Stall

Naomi Wairimu sells home-made fruit juices which she prepares in her kitchen after returning from the market at 8pm, using two blenders. In the morning she carries the juice in a 20 litre pack and walks 3 kilometres to the nearest bus stop. She hopes to receive further funding to purchase a pulping machine in order to increase production of the juice.

Naomi and her six members of staff also prepare fruit to sell at lunchtime as fruit salad snacks.

Kenya Gatsby Trust (KGT) funded Naomi’s training to meet the health and quality certification test at the Kenya Bureau of Standards and also funded the purchase of a bicycle distribution trolley, designed by technologists at JKUAT, but which is no longer used for transportation and seems to be a focal feature at the stall.

However, to enable her to sell her fruit juices to hotels who have expressed an interest in placing bulk orders, she requires a second-hand car so that she can transport the juices direct to the buyers. KGT are funding KSh 200,000 to cover the cost of purchasing a vehicle and also the maintenance and repair. It is expected that Naomi will receive a second-hand vehicle by the end of 2007.and that she will pay off the loan in full within a 3-4 month period.
