Summary of Science and Engineering Education programmes

Gatsby’s interest in science and engineering education dates back to the late 1980s. Since that time Trustees have supported a range of programmes in this area. However, following a review of activity, Trustees have agreed to focus Gatsby’s work on three key aims:

  • to support teachers of 11-19 physical science, by piloting new approaches to science teacher recruitment and professional development and by supporting curriculum resources which encourage innovation in the classroom;
  • to support the teaching of engineering and science in the Further Education (FE) sector, by developing a range of professional development opportunities for lecturers in FE and supporting the teaching of the 14-19 engineering diploma; and
  • to support the current national drive for greater rationalisation and coordination of UK science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.

Gatsby Technical Education Projects (GTEP) was established as a separate charity in 1996, to develop and manage Gatsby’s education projects. The GTEP website (www.gtep.co.uk) contains details of Gatsby’s current and recent education programmes.
