Summary of Science and Engineering Education programmes

The Trustees aim, through their grants, to contribute to significant and measurable improvements in:

  • the number and quality of physical science teachers and the quality of physical science in secondary schools;
  • the quality of engineering and vocational science in Further Education (FE);
  • the level of high quality collaboration between FE colleges and local industry, including knowledge and technology transfer;
  • the levels of coordination and rationalisation of UK science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) education activities
The recent focus in this area has sharpened, seeing the number of programmes reduce in number but increase in scale and ambition.

At its heart, however, Gatsby’s mission in this category continues to be based on the belief that young people are the nation’s most valuable resource, and that sensitive and careful nurturing of their knowledge and skills through high quality teaching is key to the future economic well-being of the UK.
