Science Enhancement Programme (SEP)

Aim

To develop innovative resources that support the teaching and learning of contemporary science and/or offer modern contexts for the teaching of fundamental scientific concepts; and work with a range of partners to establish programmes of teacher professional development which effect change in teaching practice and support the adoption and classroom use of SEP resources.

Background

Established in 1998, SEP continues to develop high-quality but affordable equipment and publications - including booklets, CD-ROMs, interactive web-based projects and worksheets - all aimed at encouraging practical work in the classroom. It also supports professional development through research into effective models and practices and the delivery of tailored courses focused on practical work and scientific investigation.

SEP has enjoyed a long-standing partnership with Middlesex University and in particular with the spin-off company Middlesex University Teaching Resources (www.mutr.co.uk). This collaboration has resulted in the development of a range of low-cost practical equipment and materials to complement SEP’s publications on innovative practical work.

SEP communicates to its target audience of science teachers in a variety of ways, although chief among these is the SEP Associates scheme. Any UK secondary science teacher may sign up free of charge to become an SEP Associate via the SEP website (www.sep.org.uk). Associates are offered free SEP resource publications, exclusive on-line resources and discounts on practical equipment and materials. The Associate scheme was launched in 2005 and membership already stands at over 6,000.
