Luke Potter

Africa Programmes Director - Forestry & Tea

Gatsby Africa - London Office

Potter, Luke

What I do

I am based in London and oversee Gatsby’s forestry and tea portfolio. This includes our forestry programmes in Tanzania and Kenya, our tea programmes in Tanzania and Rwanda, and our Programme Related Investments (PRI) in the tea sector in Tanzania and Rwanda. The PRI work covers two greenfield farmer-service companies and two brownfield tea factories.

What motivates me

I strongly believe in the need for societies to offer as equal an opportunity as possible to all, and that, while economic competitiveness is essential to build a country, long-term stability is not achievable unless the gains are widely spread. Outside work, I love water-sports, camping and hiking and am always keen to talk about adventures outside the city.

My Path to Gatsby

I have been working in economic development since 2008, having transitioned from the private sector. Gatsby Africa’s Executive Director Justin Highstead and I met in Nairobi in 2011/12 and we kept in touch over several years. I was particularly interested in Gatsby’s blend of programmes and investments, which demonstrated a willingness and ability to apply a variety of different tools in a patient manner.
