Background & objectives

Gatsby is proud to support the transformation of Cambridge Arts Theatre into one of the UK’s leading regional stages—an inspiring home for world-class touring productions and the boldest new voices in theatre.

Established in 1936, the theatre has long been a cornerstone of the Cambridge’s ’s cultural life. It has welcomed generations of theatregoers and played formative role in the careers of many acclaimed artists, including Sir Ian McKellen, who made his stage debut at the theatre and has since championed its redevelopment.

Key elements of the redevelopment

  • A full renovation of the 666-seat auditorium

  • Improved audience comfort, accessibility, and facilities

  • Enhanced sightlines, acoustics, and stage technology

The results

With Gatsby’s support, the theatre is undergoing a comprehensive refurbishment of both its historic auditorium and essential backstage areas. Designed by architect Ian Chalk, the project enhances the theatre’s technical capabilities and visitor experience while preserving its unique character.

These upgrades will ensure Cambridge Arts Theatre continues to thrive as a dynamic, inclusive venue — enabling outstanding performances and creative careers for years to come.

The Cambridge Arts Theatre sits at the very heart of Cambridge’s rich cultural heritage, and the careers of many of our finest actors and directors of both stage and screen have started at the Cambridge Arts Theatre.
