A new report, Generative AI in Further Education, by David Jennings and Daniel Brett, explores how colleges across England are beginning to engage with AI – and what support they need to adopt it confidently and responsibly. Through workshops with principals, teaching staff, professional services teams and student-led interviews, the research reveals a sector that is curious, creative and already experimenting, yet held back by limited training, infrastructure challenges and a lack of clear national guidance.
AI is already shaping learners’ experiences, with many students using tools such as ChatGPT to support coursework, creativity and workplace tasks. Staff, meanwhile, are trialling AI for planning, feedback, learner support and operational efficiency. A standout feature of the research is the Vocational Education Scenario Builder, a bespoke tool that helped participants explore how AI could reshape teaching, roles and institutional practice within their own local contexts – moving beyond generic use cases toward grounded, staff-led innovation.
The report also highlights the need for sector-wide collaboration to share learning, avoid duplication and ensure AI adoption reflects real FE priorities. Participants repeatedly emphasised the value of time, space and peer networks to test new approaches and build confidence, underscoring that thoughtful adoption requires both local experimentation and coordinated national support.
Reflecting on the importance of the work, Daniel Sandford Smith, Director of Programmes, said:
“FE is often overlooked in national AI discussions, yet it sits at the frontline of skills, employment and innovation. This research shows the sector’s potential to shape AI adoption in ways that are practical, ethical and deeply rooted in local needs. Supporting colleges to experiment safely and share what they learn is essential if we want AI to enhance – not disrupt – their mission.”
The report sets out opportunities for sector bodies, policymakers and colleges to collaborate on building the confidence, capability and conditions needed for thoughtful AI adoption.
