The shortage of STEM skills across key industries is much discussed. At Gatsby, our focus is on what that looks like for the part of the workforce that we define as technicians. Technicians are the backbone of our economy and much of our work has the goal of increasing the number of people thriving in technician careers.

Why Technicians Matter
Technicians are essential across almost ever sector and industry and yet the educational and training pathways into technician roles have often been poorly served. Gatsby’s interest lies in addressing these structural gaps.
Our work has focused on improving the foundations: supporting the development of occupational standards, professional registration, institutional commitments and better labour market insight.

Gatsby’s Approach
We take a long-term, systems-based approach. Working with government, employers and education providers, we aim to embed support and strengthening of the technician workforce into broader thinking on productivity, opportunity and national capacity. Our goal is not simply to raise the profile of technician roles but to ensure they are supported by strong, resilient pathways and policy. This is not a niche issue. It is central to the country’s ability to innovate and grow.
Being a technician can be a gateway to social mobility and personal fulfilment for the individual and offer a chance to play a meaningful part in the prosperity and welfare of the country.
