Conferences are a key part of our mission to advance experimental and theoretical understanding of neural circuits and behavior, and build capacity across the neuroscience community. We facilitate the dissemination of science, networking, cross-disciplinary exchange, and access for early career researchers.
Conferences we've supported
Society for Neuroscience
Since 2023, we have funded the Trainee Professional Development Award programme at the Society for Neuroscience Annual Conferences. This supports the next generation of neuroscientists by providing opportunities for early-career scientists to present research and interact with peers, mentors, and the wider neuroscience community”.
COSYNE
Cosyne is the primary mid-sized conference for computational and computationally minded systems neuroscientists.
It is distinguished from other comparable meetings by its active efforts to bring together experimentalists and theorists, by an emphasis on the systems level, and by a strong reviewing procedure to maintain a high quality of selected oral and poster presentations.
In 2016, Gatsby provided significant support for six meetings (2017 – 2022) in the series. The funding allowed the Cosyne leadership to develop and stabilise several new initiatives that are considered as crucial to the future success of the conference.
AREADNE
Through the decade-plus of AREADNE Conferences, the organisers have created a high-profile forum that gathers the global scientific leaders who work on neural ensembles and creates a touch-point for a widely disparate and hybrid field.
The conference format is carefully planned to foster discussion and interaction between ~120 investigators of different career stages to encourage the establishment of lasting professional relationships. Both group leaders and trainees equally value the experience, which is an intensive week of talks, short talks from early career researchers, working lunches and dinners, and evening poster presentations. Critical to its success is the requirement that senior investigators attend and stay for all of the meeting.
The Assembly and Function of Neuronal Circuits
Since its inception in 2003, the Assembly meetings series has become known as the key small conference and ‘go-to meeting’ for circuits research. The meetings bring together researchers who think about neural circuits from multiple different angles and who are unlikely to interact with each other on a daily basis. The Stefano Franscini Monte Verita conference centre, located on a hill overlooking Ascona and its lake, hosts about 110 participants including speakers and organisers.
Gatsby’s support
Developing conference programmes
Funding from Gatsby enables organisers to showcase rapid research at the highest level, and extend coverage into emerging fields not previously well accessible to the industry.
Travel grants
Travel bursaries, combined with a faculty mentoring programme, help us encourage promising undergraduates from underrepresented groups to consider a career in the field.
Support for speakers
Gatsby provide targeted support for under-represented groups, broadening the reach of the meeting to areas of the world beyond their traditional participation.
