Plant Science
Advancing knowledge and nurturing talent in the field of fundamental plant biology and bioscience
Our mission is to support the best fundamental plant science research in the UK, particularly in the areas of pathology and development. In doing so we can help solve some of the greatest challenges posed by population growth and climate change.

Our motiviation
Biology is a diverse subject and with the huge interest in the biosciences and rapid developments in contemporary biology, plant science does not always get the focus it once had in our schools. We support teachers to develop their knowledge and enthusiasm for plant science so that they can pass this on to their students
People are at the heart of our plant science programme, and we aim to nurture, sustain and increase the supply of high quality researchers in plant ecology through studentships, careers advice, and ad hoc grants. We also provide significant funding to international centres of excellence in bioscience research. This includes the construction of The Sainsbury Laboratory, within the grounds of the Cambridge University Botanic Garden, which houses about 150 of the world’s best plant scientists and support staff.
Creating centres of excellence
Provide core funding for outstanding centres of plant science research in the UK
Funding world class research
Enable exceptional scientists to make their mark, and forge new discoveries
Inspiring undergraduates
Ensure that budding young plant scientists are inspired to pursue their ambitions
Promoting plant science in schools
Develop the science curriculum, supporting teachers and connecting bioscientists with schools
