We fund and implement programmes that aim to transform the performance of key sectors in East Africa by tackling both immediate constraints and long-term structural challenges. Ultimately we look to build competitive and profitable sectors with the mechanisms to adapt to future circumstances, ensuring sustainable growth while creating jobs and raising incomes.
Gatsby has funded and implemented programmes in Africa since 1985 with the overall objective of creating jobs and improving incomes for poor people. We are now focused on accelerating inclusive and sustainable growth in East Africa. We plan to achieve this by demonstrating innovative and ambitious approaches to transforming key sectors, such as cotton in Tanzania.
We look to increase access to the finance needed to transform East African sectors by taking calculated risks of our own to lessen risks for others – incubating innovative ideas and promising businesses in order to prove concepts. By demonstrating models we aim to reduce barriers to investment, ultimately encouraging greater private sector involvement to scale interventions.
We have set-up and continue to support a number of independent institutions in East Africa dedicated to sector development. These are governed, managed and staffed by local people. The aim is to empower people who have the local knowledge, experience and networks necessary for success, while building long-term capacity within East Africa to drive sector change.
