The Big Bang Fair 2023

The Big Bang Fair is the largest of its kind, celebrating science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) for young people in the UK. In June, Technicians: We Make the Difference featured at the 2023 fair with a stand, comprising of thousands of young people and teachers explore career opportunities in STEM. Our stand gave students the opportunity to complete an interactive Role Finder quiz on iPads, as used at the Technicians: The David Sainsbury Gallery, where the students are matched to a selection of 100 technician roles based on their natural skills and interests. The students then chose their suggested roles from 100 illustrative technician postcards, with detailed information on how to find out more about these roles.

Additionally, three featured technicians from the campaign (Tyler, Kieran and Eva) joined the stand to perform demonstrations of their day job and interact with the students. Tyler, a Simulation Technician from the NHS, brought a manikin with him to demonstrate how he uses AI technology to control it and replicate emergency scenarios for doctors and nurses to train on. Kieran and Eva, both Engineering Manufacturing Technicians, brought microscopes with them for the students to see some of the materials up-close that they engineer to make specialist parts for cars and aerospace.
